Dan Zhu zong (丹朱宗) was a concubine of Emperor Shun (舜皇帝), who reigned from 2254 to 2192 BC during the reign of the twenty-third dynasty in China. She is known for her beauty and contrasting background with that of Empress Nü Ying (女英皇后). Dan Zhu zong was originally a servant girl named Guanyin, meaning "the one who sees the suffering of all beings." She belonged to Emperor Shun's younger brother, Dang, who lived in a remote place. One day, Emperor Shun saw her and immediately recognized her exceptional beauty. Despite her humble background, Dan Zhu zong was well-mannered, virtuous, and extremely intelligent. She quickly won over the hearts of everyone she met. The emperor appointed her as his personal attendant, and soon after, he decided to make her a concubine. Their relationship lasted for several decades, during which they had two daughters together. However, Emperor Shun's relationship with Empress Nü Ying was not smooth. They were often in conflict over political matters. Despite this, both the emperor and Empress Nü Ying respected Dan Zhu zong and held her in high esteem due to her wisdom and virtue. In one notable incident, a group of rebels attacked Emperor Shun's palace while he was away on an expedition. Empress Nü Ying took charge of defending the palace with the help of Dan Zhu zong. They successfully repelled the attackers, further cementing their respect for each other. Although Dan Zhu zong held great influence over Emperor Shun, she remained humble and never sought to replace Empress Nü Ying as the empress or to seize power for herself. Instead, she used her intelligence and wisdom to help maintain peace and stability during a tumultuous time in China's history. When Emperor Shun passed away, Dan Zhu zong was deeply saddened but accepted her fate without complaint. Empress Nü Ying treated her with kindness until the end of her days, demonstrating their mutual respect for one another.
